TitleChange in Epidemiology of uveitis in a Tertiary Referral Center in Taiwan
PurposeTo discuss epidemiology of newly developed uveitis between 2016 and 2018 in a tertiary referral center in Taiwan.
MethodsRetrospectively reviewed of all newly developed uveitic patients between 2016 and 2018 in Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH). Etiology was statistically analyzed and compared to the other two previous epidemiologic studies in Taiwan.
ResultsTotal 233 cases were enrolled. One-hundred twenty-three (52.8%), 2 (0.9%), 15 (6.4%) and 93 (39.9%) had anterior, intermediate, posterior and panuveitis. Regarding the etiology, 175 (76.1%) had noninfectious and 32 (13.7%) had infectious uveitis. Other 26 (11.2%) had idiopathic uveitis. Non-infectious uveitis included 110 (47.2%) acute anterior uveitis (AAU), 18 (7.7%) Behcet’s disease (BD), 13 (5.6%) Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease and 9 (3.9%) sarcoidosis. Infectious uveitis included 11 (4.7%) tuberculosis (TB), 11 (4.7%) cytomegalovirus uveitis, 3 (1.3%) acute retinal necrosis and 3 (1.3%) syphilis. Compare to the study in 1988 (TVGH) and 2016 (Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, KVGH), AAU remained the most common uveitis. In 1988, BD was the second most uveitis in TVGH, composed of 17.9% in all diagnosis. In our study and the KVGH study, BD only composed of 7.7% and 3.8% respectively, and it was the third most uveitis in KVGH, less than VKH. TB was the most common infectious uveitis in our series, but this trend was not observed in other 2 studies.
ConclusionThe incidence of uveitis differed from the study 30 years ago in the same hospital. This phenomenon may be resulted from change of gene prevalence in the population.
