TitleSocioeconomic association with Visual loss in uveitis: Korean Cohort Study from 2002 to 2013
PurposeTo investigate socioeconomic and clinical risk factors for blindness in uveitis patients
MethodsFrom a national sample cohort (n = 1,025,340), 14,408 patients with new-onset uveitis were selected. Legal blindness was defined as best-corrected visual acuity in the worse-eyeing eye of <20/400. Risk factors for legal blindness after uveitis occurrence were investigated using multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression.
ResultsThe overall incidence of legal blindness in uveitis patients was 2.09 in 1000 person-years (95% CI, 1.74-2.50). Risk factors for blindness were over 51 years old (HR 4.17, 95% CI, 1.83-9.47), lower one-third household income (HR 1.62, 95% CI, 1.16-2.27), and having Behcet’s disease (HR 3.50, 95% CI, 1.54-7.94).
ConclusionSocioeconomic factors, as well as clinical factors, affects risk for blindness in uveitis patients, which will help in the assessment of the blindness-related socioeconomic burden and in health care planning in uveitis patients.
