TitleThe results of anti-TNF-α therapy in pediatric refractory uveitis associated with Behçet’s disease
PurposeTo assess the effects of anti-TNF-α therapy in pediatric cases with refractory uveitis of Behçet's disease (BD).
MethodsSix children (4 girls, 2 boys) with BD uveitis who were followed between 2010-2017 were enrolled in this study. Their medical records were examined in terms of demographic and clinical data.
ResultsThe mean age of children included in the study was 11.17 (8-16) years. Four children had panuveitis, and two had posterior uveitis. Fundus fluorescein angiography showed retinal vasculitis in all children and macular edema in two children. Initially, conventional immunosuppression therapy was started in all children. During the follow-up visits, treatment success was not achieved and treatment was switched to anti-TNF-α (adalimumab) treatment. After the anti-TNF-α treatment period, uveitic findings of BD were resolved in five children, but were not in one. In all children, no adverse reaction was noted, and anti-TNF-α therapy well tolerated.
ConclusionWhen conventional immunosuppression therapy failed, treatment of pediatric uveitis of BD with adalimumab may led to clinical signs improvement while providing steroid-sparing effect. However, controlled prospective clinical studies are needed to select adalimumab as first-line therapy in pediatric uveitis of BD.
