TitleComparison of morphological pattern of uveitic macular edema and diabetic macular edema on SS OCT
PurposeTo compare the morphological pattern of eyes with uveitic macular edema (ME) and eyes with diabetic macular edema.
Methods50 consecutive patients each with ME due to uveitis and diabetic retinopathy without traction underwent SS OCT imaging( Swept Source OCT DRI OCT-1 Atlantis). Central point thickness (CPT) was measured in radial scan with manual caliper. Inbuilt software was used to automatically calculate central subfield thickness (CST).
ResultsIn uveitic eyes, 23 had CME and 27 had DME (diabetic group 22 - CME and 28 - DME). Serous retinal detachment (SRD) was significantly more (19, 38%) in uveitis than in diabetes (9, 18%) (p value 0.002). Cystic spaces were present in both outer and inner retinal layers in the majority of eyes with uveitis (28 eyes,56%) and diabetes (37 eyes, 74%) but if only one layer was involved it was almost always the inner retinal layer in uveitis (13 eyes, 26%) whereas in diabetes it was the outer retinal layer (13 eyes (26%). The mean CPT was 366.60 ± 208.88 in uveitis and 274.78 ± 135.90 in diabetes (p value 0.011). The mean CST values were also higher in uveitic group (389.76 ± 166.34) (diabetic group - 317.94 ± 113.07) (p value 0.007).
ConclusionCPT and CST was significantly higher in eyes with CME in both uveitic and diabetic eyes. The proportion of cysts in the inner retinal layer was significantly higher in uveitic eyes while it was higher in the outer retinal layer in the diabetic group. The mean CPT and CST values were also significantly higher in the uveitic group.
