TitleObjective evaluation of the intraocular inflammation using Swept-Source Optical coherence tomography
PurposeTo develop an objective intraocular inflammation composite score.
MethodsHealthy controls, patients with inactive uveitis and patients with active uveitis were included. The sample was stratified according to the standard degree of inflammation. SS-OCT images
were processed by different algorithms. We studied 8 items in 3 domains: anterior, intermediate and posterior, which were correlated with SUN, NEI and VAS-10 activity scales.
ResultsWe analyzed 20 healthy eyes and 234 eyes with uveitis. VAS-10 showed a moderate significant correlation with respect to the VA LogMAR (r = 0.415, p <0.0001). After ranking, the chosen items for the final score were: the number of cells in the anterior chamber (NCAC) for the anterior domain, the relative intensity of the vitreous (HD-RIVC) for the intermediate domain and, in the posterior domain: the over-red threshold (ORT) and the central macular thickness (CMT). All selected items showed a high discriminatory power between active and inactive eyes, as well as significant correlation with the corresponding clinical scales and VAS-10. Final composite score (SS-OCT-UAS) was calculated as follows: SS-OCT-UAS=(NCACx0.143)+(HD RIVCx0.294)+(ORTx0.609)+(CMTx0.945).
ConclusionThe global intraocular inflammation can be evaluated objectively, continuously, consistently and in a valid manner through the analysis and a combined weighting of different SS-OCT scans.
