TitleOptical coherence tomography angiography in Behcet uveitis
PurposeTo describe optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in eyes with Behçet uveitis (BU) and to compare these findings with those in inactive BU and Behçet disease (BD) patients without uveitis.
MethodsPatients with clinically active and inactive BU, nonocular BD and healthy controls were evaluated using OCTA (Zeiss Angioplex). OCT angiograms were reviewed and analyzed. Vessel and perfusion densities (VD, PD) were assessed on 3x3 mm images for superficial (SCP) and deep capillary plexi (DCP). Foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, FAZ perimeter and FAZ circularity were also evaluated.
Results28 eyes with active BU, 62 eyes with inactive BU, 40 eyes of nonocular BD and 33 healthy control eyes were included. VD was lower in inactive BU than in nonocular BD and controls in SCP (16.8 vs 20.08 (p=0.00); 16.8 vs 20.23 (p= 0.017)). This was also true for PD (31.66 vs 37.03 (p=0.00); 31.66 vs 34.9 (p=0.00)). In DCP, VD was lower in both active and inactive BU when compared to nonocular BD and controls (19.94, 17.91, 23.68 and 22.38, respectively.) In SCP no significant difference in FAZ area and circularity was noted, but FAZ perimeter was longer in inactive BU. In DCP, FAZ area and perimeter were significantly higher, and circularity was disturbed in active and inactive BU compared to nonocular BD and controls.
ConclusionOCTA enables evaluation of SCP and DCP. In this group of Behçet patients SCP VD and PD are found to be affected in inactive BU, but DCP is affected in both active and inactive BU with significant changes in FAZ.
