TitleNon-inflammatory conditions misdiagnosed as retinal vasculitis
PurposeTo report five cases of non-inflammatory conditions misdiagnosed as retinal vasculitis.
MethodsA retrospective case series.
ResultsBoth eyes were affected in four cases. There were vitreous cells in one eye and vitreous hemorrhage in two eyes. Fundus examination showed retinal vascular sheathing in 6 cases, multiple peripheral retinal hemorrhages in 3 eyes, combined central retinal artery occlusion and central retinal vein occlusion in one eye and retinal detachment in one eye. Fluorescein angiography revealed areas of peripheral ischemia in 5 eyes, Coats-like changes in one eye, and peripheral retinal neovascularization in 3 eyes. Final diagnosis was chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in one case, acute lymphoblastic leukemia in one case, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy in two cases and retinopathy of prematurity in one case.
ConclusionVarious specific non-inflammatory conditions can lead to retinal vascular changes that may mimic retinal vasculitis. Physicians should pay close attention to the clinical presentation in order to rule out a masquerade syndrome.
