| Title | Comparison of Trabeculectomy with Ahmed glaucoma valve implant in the management of pediatric uveitic glaucoma |
| Purpose | To compare the outcomes of two surgical procedures in the management of pediatric uveitic glaucoma. |
| Methods | Retrospective chart analysis of cases of pediatric uveitic glaucoma who underwent surgery from January 2007 to December 2018 was performed. One eye each of 10 children who underwent trabeculecomy with Mitomycin C was compared with 4 eyes of 4 children who underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implant during this period. Those with a follow up of < 6 months were excluded. Success was defined as IOP > 6 and <18 mmHg with > 20% drop from preoperative IOP at the last visit. |
| Results | Mean age (years) in the trabeculectomy group was 9.1±3.8 and in the AGV group was 12.8±7.4 (p=0.24). Uveitic diagnosis in the trabeculctomy group included Vogt Koyanagi Harada’s disease in 2 eyes and Sarcoidosis in 2 eyes; in the AGV group, juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis in one eye and tuberculosis in one eye; rest were idiopathic. Preoperative median intraocular pressure (IOP) was 37 mmHg in the trabeculectomy group and 32 mmHg in the AGV group (p=0.05).Preoperative median best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.38 in the trabeculectomy group and 1.47 in the AGV group (p=0.28). Median IOP; final visit was 14.5mmHg in the trabeculectomy group and 11 in the AGV group (p=0.63). Median change in BCVA; 0.15 in the trabeculectomy group and 0.17 in the AGV group p= (0.93). Median follow-up period (years); 10.2 in the trabeculectomy group and 6.8 in the AGV group (p=0.3). Successful control of IOP was obtained in 6 eyes (60%) in the trabeculectomy group and 2 eyes in the AGV group (50%) (p=0.62). |
| Conclusion | Both surgical techniques were equally effective in their outcomes. |
