| Title | Does glaucoma surgery reduce recurrence rates in uveitic eyes?: A case control study |
| Purpose | To compare the 6 month recurrence rates of uveitis in eyes with uveitic glaucoma undergoing trabeculectomy with eyes treated medically. |
| Methods | We included patients with medically controlled uveitis (recurrence free for at least 3 months) who had glaucoma and underwent trabeculectomy( with or without phacoemulsification ) or medical management. Controls met the same criteria and had not undergone any glaucoma surgery and were matched by age group and anatomical diagnosis (anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis and pan uveitis. Since the surgery group had a mean duration between first visst and surgery of 9.5 months, cases had an at least 10 month follow up prior to inclusion
Recurrence of uveitis was defined as anterior chamber activity of having at least +0.5 anterior chamber cells or +1 aqueous flare occurring more than 1 month following the operation.. Both cases and controls were followed up for 6 months after surgery. |
| Results | 93 patients ( 109 eyes) in the surgery group and 93 patients (116 eyes) who met inclusion and exclusion criteria were included as controls.
There was no statistically significant differences in the age, gender, duration of disease , aqueous flare and type of glaucoma between groups. 24/109(16.5%) and 20/116(13.8%) cases and controls respectively had a recurrence within 6 months ( p=0.37). there were no differences in recurrence rates between eyes based on mechanism of glaucoma or type of surgery( trabeculectomy vs combined), or classification of uveitis. |
| Conclusion | Glaucoma surgery was not associated with a reduced recurrence rate in the short term in uveitic eyes. |
| Conflict of interest | No |
