| Title | En face slab optical coherence tomography for uveitic eyes with normal appearance on color fundus photography |
| Purpose | To evaluate the damage to the innermost retina in uveitic eyes by en face slab optical coherence tomography (OCT). |
| Methods | We retrospectively reviewed 36 eyes with quiescent uveitis that do not show obvious macular abnormalities on color fundus photography (CFP) and have image datasets acquired by Cirrus HD-OCT and PLEX Elite 9000. Using the OCT image datasets, 2-dimensional en face slab OCT images of the innermost retina were reconstructed and graded from 0 (no damage) to 3 (severe damage) according to the ratio of dark area to total area, and the distribution of grades was calculated. |
| Results | The causes of uveitis were sarcoidosis (14%), Behçet's disease (14%), Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (11%), others (17%), and unclassified (44%). The distribution of en face slab OCT grades was grade 0 (39%), grade 1 (36%), grade 2 (14%), and grade 3 (11%) on Cirrus HD-OCT and grade 0 (31%), grade 1 (39%), grade 2 (14%), and grade 3 (17%) on PLEX Elite 9000. Agreement of OCT grade between the two OCT models was 72%. |
| Conclusion | En face slab OCT is a useful modality to evaluate the damage to the innermost retina in uveitic eyes because it could detect abnormal OCT signals in 80-90% of the eyes with no apparent macular abnormality on conventional CFP. |
