| Title | Pathological changes in retinal pigment epithelium in enucleated uveitic eyeballs |
| Accept poster if oral is not possible ? | Yes |
| Purpose | Posterior uveitis affects the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Optical coherence tomography studies in stromal choroiditis and retinitis had shown those change and corresponding findings in enucleated eyeballs were rare, particularly when they were removed in painful blind uveitic eyes. Purpose of the study were to depict the change in RPE supported by gross enface RPE observations, histopathology and immunohistochemistry in the selected cases. |
| Methods | Laboratory based observational study, done in ocular pathology laboratory in a tertiary institute of northeast India. Total eleven (n=11) cases were studied for 9 years. All cases were removed for painful blind eye with secondary glaucoma refractory to maximum medical treatment. RPE layers were studied in fresh specimen with in vitro fluorescein stain (n=6) and all cases had conventional hematoxylin eosin staining. (n=4) cases had additional immunohistochemistry study done. |
| Results | Cohort included (n-5 cases) of sympathetic ophthalmia inciting eyes; one (n=1 case) of VKH; (n=3 cases) in endophthalmitis cases (Two-Septate fungus cases, one-Bacterial case); (n-1 case) of acute retinal necrosis and (n=2 cases) in Rubella retinopathy. Pattern of RPE atrophies were studied in fresh specimen and compared with H&E stained slides. RPE undulations were seen in SO (in 3 cases/5 cases) and VKH case (n=1). Endophthalmitis cases had significant diffuse RPE atrophies and Rubella retinopathies had non specific RPE alterations. |
| Conclusion | Histopathology of RPE change in posterior or panuveitis were observed with characteristics findings. |
