| Purpose | Laser flare photometric (LFP) evaluation of HLA-B27+ anterior uveitis (AU) patients during active inflammation, follow-up and in remission. |
| Methods | Clinical records of 40 patients (40 eyes with AU and 39 quiet eyes) who presented with HLA-B27+ AU and 11 patients (22 eyes) with a history of HLA-B27+ AU in remission for 2 years (control group) were reviewed. |
| Results | Mean initial flare of the eyes with AU and contralateral eyes were 279,1±247,1 and 7,28±5,9, respectively. The interval between onset of onset of symptoms and initial visit was 5 days [1-30]. There was a significant correlation between time to treatment and initial flare (p = 0.00, rho=0.654). A significant negative correlation between initial flare and initial Snellen visual acuity (p = 0.00, rho=-0.505) was found. A significant correlation was found between initial flare and 1st week and 1st month flare values (p = 0.00, 0.00 / rho=0.887, 0.665, respectively). In 17 patients, flare was 8ph/ms despite absence of anterior chamber (AC) cells at 1st month visit. There was a significant flare difference between the control group (5ph/ms) and 39 contralateral quiet eyes of AU patients (7ph/ms) (p<0.05). |
| Conclusion | High flare despite resolution of AC cells indicates ongoing inflammation and the need for prolonged treatment in patients with HLA-B27+ AU. |
