TitleEpidemiology of macular edema and epiretinal membrane in patients with uveitis
Purpose Macular edema (ME) and epiretinal membrane (ERM) in patients with uveitis can cause vision loss. However, ME and ERM have not been studied in a large cohort of uveitis patients. In this study, we examined the prevalence and features of ME and ERM in patients with uveitis.
Methods1,318 patients (2,017 eyes; 881 eyes in men, 1,136 eyes in women) with mean age of 47.1±19.1 years diagnosed with uveitis diagnosed at Tokyo Medical University Hospital between 2011 and 2016 were analyzed. Retrospective study based on medical chart review. All cases were evaluated at the time of initial visit, and cases in which follow-up was possible for more than 6 months were evaluated. The SS-OCT and/or SD-OCT images of all the subjects were reviewed to assess ME and ERM.
ResultsME and ERM were detected in 7.0% and 6.8%, respectively, of all uveitis patients. At initial visit, high prevalence of ME was found in toxocariasis, Behcet disease and sarcoidosis; while high prevalence of ERM was observed in sarcoidosis, toxocariasis and Behcet disease. The prevalence of ME and ERM in all uveitis cases tended to increase after 6-month follow-up due to new onset cases and cases of stopping follow-up within 6 months.
ConclusionThe Prevalence of ME and ERM differs among diseases of uveitis, suggesting that they may develop via different pathogenic mechanisms. Inflammatory cells and cytokines involving each uveitis may contribute to form ME and ERM.
