TitleClinical features of viral uveitis
PurposeTo report the clinical features of viral uveitis (VU)
MethodsPatients with VU referred to our department from February 2019 to January 2021 were included in a prospective observational study. Ophthalmic examination and appropriate laboratory investigations were completed. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of aqueous humor samples (PCR-AH) was performed when needed.
ResultsNineteen patients were included. The mean age was 47 years, 9 were female and 10 were male. Herpes viridae represented 90% of VU (n=17): Herpes simplex (HSV n=10), Varicella zoster viruses (VZV n=5) and Cytomegalovirus (CMV n=2). Other less frequent causes were Measles (MV n=1) and Human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV n=1). Ocular involvement was unilateral in all cases. HSV uveitis was anterior in all cases and granulomatous in 4 eyes. Corneal hypoesthesia (n=4), posterior synechiae (n=7), sectoral iris atrophy (n=4), ocular hypertension (n=4) and dendritic ulcer (n=7), were noted. The diagnosis was clinical in 6 eyes, and based on PCR-AC in 4 eyes. In the VZV group, isolated granulomatous panuveitis was noted in 3 cases and the diagnosis was based on PCR-AH.
ConclusionThere is a wide range of clinical features of VU with overlapping manifestations in different viruses. PCR-AH can be a valuable tool to identify the pathogen
