TitlePrevalence, pattern and complications of uveitis in a tertiary eye centre of southeast region of Bangladesh
PurposeThe aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence, pattern and complication of uveitis in patients presenting in a tertiary eye center.
MethodsA retrospective review of 257 consecutive patients with uveitis form August 2006 to July 2007 attending in outpatient department of a tertiary eye care centre. All findings including demography,history, ocular and systemic examination, ancillary test with laboratory investigation, treatment and outcome were recorded from departmental record book on a standard data collection sheet.
ResultsIn a time period of one year among total 138520 out door patients, 257 (1.8 per thousand) were presented with uveitis. 311 eyes of 257 consecutive patients were included in this study.Among the study populatiob 152 (59.1%) were male & 105 (40.9%) female with mean age 35.75  15.87(SD) years.Bilateral involvement was 54 (21%). Blurred vision (37.7%) is more common symptom than photophobia (22.6%). Anterior uveitis was seen in 250 (80.39%) followed by posterior uveitis 27 (8.68%), intermediate uveitis 14 (4.50%) & pan-uveitis 20 (6.43%). Most of the patients 197(76.65%) received only topical steroid & cycloplegic. Cataract was the commonest (50.9%) complication followed by glaucoma. After medication 33(10.6%) of uveitic eyes showed severe vision impairment.
ConclusionAlthough the prevalence of uveitis is low but it’s ocular co-morbidity is very high. Anterior uveitis is the commonest type of uveitis, and the cause could not be found in most of the cases in our setting. Awareness and Meticulous management is a mandatory to address this ocular problem.
