TitleColombian Uveitis Multicentric Study (COL-UVEA): Clinical features of uveitis and clinical risk factors for vision impairment.
PurposeTo describe the clinical characteristics of uveitis in 9 different centers and determine the risk factors for visual impairment.
MethodsA cross-sectional study reviewing clinical records of patients attending nine ophthalmological centers in five cities in Colombia.
Results3.404 patients were studied; 54.4% were women. The average age of the first episode was 39.75 (20.35). The mean visual acuity at its worst was 0.92 (0.92) LogMar. The most common characteristics were anterior uveitis (49.4%), with an acute course (48.7%), and non-granulomatous (83.9%). Uveitis was infectious primarily (37.8%), and the most frequent etiology was idiopathic (29.6%), followed by toxoplasmosis (25.3%). The adjusted multivariate analysis for visual impairment showed that patients of 0-9 years had an OR of 2.20 (95% CI 1.10-4.41, P=0.025). Likewise, patients with posterior uveitis had an OR of 1.82 (95% CI 1.38-2.39, P<0.001), and those with panuveitis had an OR of 2.02 (95% CI 1.58-2.59, P<0.001). Also, acute uveitis, had an OR of 1.35 (95% CI 1.07-1.70, P=0.010). Regarding complications, retinal detachment presented an OR of 2.76 (95% CI 1.88-4.14, P<0.001), band keratopathy had an OR of 2.49 (95% CI 1.10-6.37, P=0.039), and glaucoma had an OR of 1.97 (95% CI 1.42-2.77, P<0.001).
ConclusionChildren between 0 to 9 years old are at a greater risk of developing visual impairment, which has been related to posterior uveitis and panuveitis, with a granulomatous type of inflammation and an acute course. Also, the principal complications that lead to visual impairment are retinal detachment, band keratopathy, and glaucoma.
