TitleEvaluation of outer plexiform layer changes with a semi-automated quantitative program in patients who received treatment for cat-scratch neuroretinitis
PurposeTo evaluate the outer plexiform layer (OPL) changes with a semi-automated program in patients treated for cat-scratch neuroretinitis.
MethodsSeventeen eyes of 14 patients diagnosed and treated for Bartonella henselae neuroretinitis in our clinic between 2016-2023, and 24 healthy eyes matched in age and gender were included. The participants' optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were taken and transferred to the ImageJ software (Bethesda, MD) program. The OPL was marked from the image passing through the foveal section with manual segmentation and the image was binarized. The OPL area (OPLA) was calculated with an automatic program. In the neuroretinitis group (NR-G,) patients with retinal, subretinal fluid, and exudate deposits on the last OCT images were excluded.
ResultsThe mean time of OCT evaluations was 23.00±21.40 months after the administration in NR-G. Compared to the healthy group (HG), the mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) was found to be significantly thinner (p=0.037), and OPLA (15597.76±2.5 mm2, 11778.38±9.1 mm2, respectively; p < 0.001) was significantly increased in the NR-G. There was a significant strong positive correlation (r=0.830; p<0.001) between the BCVA (logMAR) at admission and the final BCVA (logMAR) and a moderate negative correlation between OPLA and the final BCVA (logMAR) (r=-0.524; p=0.031) in the NR-G.
ConclusionThis study revealed significant changes in OPLA with a semi-automatic program in the NR-G compared to the HG. Quantitative evaluation of OPL might be used as a prognostic marker in these patients.
