| Title | The role of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in the pathogenesis of endogenous uveitis in children |
| Purpose | To determine the concentration of matrix metalloproteinase–9 (MMP-9) in the aqueous humor (AH) of children with endogenous uveitis and its role in the pathogenesis of the disease. |
| Methods | AH of 20 children (20 eyes with uveitis) aged 3 - 16 years (mean 11) taken during cataract (14) or glaucoma (6) surgery and 3 children with congenital cataract (control group) was examined. Inactive uveitis was observed in 9 eyes, mild or moderate inflammation - in 11. The concentration of MMP-9 was measured by ELISA kit for MMP-9 (Cloud-Clone Corp, USA). The optical density of the samples was determined using a multifunctional photometer for SynergyMX microplates (BioTek, USA). |
| Results | In the AH of children with uveitis concentration of MMP-9 was higher than in the control group (p=0.006). An increase in the concentration of MMP-9 in the AH was revealed with an increase in the degree of proliferative changes in the eye (the extent of posterior synechiae, prelental membranes, vitreous fibrosis and epiretinal membranes). |
| Conclusion | The concentration of MMP-9 increases in the AH of children with endogenous uveitis and correlates with the severity of proliferative complication that indicates the role of this biomolecule in the pathogenesis of the disease and the possibility of its use as a therapeutic target. |
