| Title | Comparison of macular thickness by optical coherence tomography before and after cataract surgery in patients with a history of uveitis. |
| Purpose | To compare macular thickness before, 1 and 3 months after cataract phacoemulsification in patients with history of uveitis, from the Inflammatory Eye Disease Clinic at Asociación para evitar la ceguera en México during one year. |
| Methods | Design: Longitudinal, prospective, observational and analytical.
Methods: All patients with history of uveitis who underwent cataract phacoemulsification were included, in whom the opacity of the cataract allowed optical coherence tomography to be performed. Demographic, clinical, pre, trans and postsurgical treatment data were collected. Macular thickness were compared by optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) before, 1 and 3 months after phacoemulsification. |
| Results | A total of 59 eyes were included, 61% were female. The average age was 53.8 +/- 19.9 years. The most frequent systemic diagnosis was Rheumatoid Arthritis (20.3%), followed by idiopathic uveitis (18.6%), VKH disease (11.9%) and Fuchs (11.9%). The baseline macular thickness had a median of 288.28±48 microns, at the first month of 302.9±83 microns and at 3 months 303.6±65 microns. The comparison of the baseline thickness and one month had a p < a 0.05 and the comparison of the baseline thickness at the third month had a p < a 0.05. The frequency of macular edema was 8.5% in the first month and 10.2% in the third month. |
| Conclusion | According to our study, there is a statistically significant difference in macular thickness in patients with history of ocular inflammatory disease; however, it does not represent a relevant impact in visual outcome. |
