| Methods | The Stanford Research Repository (STARR) database was used to identify patients treated with adalimumab for more than six months for various autoimmune disorders from June 2006 to May 2024. The data recorded included demographics, clinical diagnosis, treatment course, adalimumab, and AAA levels. |
| Results | A total of 720 patients taking adalimumab were included, of which 156 (21.6%) were positive for AAA (AAA+ group). Among 676 patients with systemic diseases, 74 (10.9%) had ocular inflammation. AAA positivity was significantly more prevalent among patients with ocular inflammation than those without (35.1% vs. 18.8%, p<0.01). Compared to the AAA- group, the AAA+ group had a significantly higher proportion of females (61.5% vs. 47.4%, p<0.01), ocular inflammation (27.6% vs. 13.3%, p<0.01), and IBD (40.4% vs. 67.8%, p<0.01). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that ocular inflammation was significantly associated with the presence of AAA (adjusted OR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.38-3.95, p<0.01), while systemic diseases did not show a significant association (adjusted OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.42-1.99, p=0.82). |
| Conclusion | Ocular inflammation, regardless of the concurrent diagnosis of systemic disease, may be associated with a higher risk of AAA in patients receiving adalimumab therapy, indicating the potential necessity for more frequent monitoring of adalimumab and AAA levels in these patients. |
