| Title | Pattern of Sympathetic Ophthalmia in a referral center in Tunisia, North Africa |
| Purpose | To describe clinical profile and visual outcomes in patients with sympathetic ophthalmia. |
| Methods | Retrospective review of the charts of 20 patients diagnosed with sympathetic ophthalmia. |
| Results | Mean age was 53.8 years with 12 male (60%) and 8 female. The most common inciting event was trauma (65%), followed by vitreoretinal surgery (20%). Mean initial BCVA was 20/250. Clinical findings included exudative retinal detachment (60%), optic disc swelling (85%), retinal striae (40%), vitritis (90%), and anterior chamber inflammation (55%). Fluorescein angiography showed pinpoints (55%), late dye pooling (55%), and disc hyperfluorescence (90%). OCT demonstrated exudative retinal detachment (70%) and folds of the retinal pigment epithelium (65%). Mean final BCVA was equal to or less than 20/200 in 20% of eyes. Complications included cataract (25%), glaucoma (20%), cystoid macular edema (20%), and choroidal neovascularization (5%). |
| Conclusion | Sympathetic ophthalmia is a rare sight-threatening condition. Complications may occur and are associated with worse visual prognosis. |
