| Title | Real life results of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implant in uveitis patients |
| Purpose | To describe the visual and inflammatory results of uveitis patients undergoing phacomulsification with primary acrylic intraocular lens implant. |
| Methods | A single-center retrospective, non-comparative cohort study was performed at a tertiary-care, university-affiliated hospital in Madrid. All patients undergoing phacomulsification with primary intraocular lens implant between August 2018 and December 2020 with a previous diagnosis of infectious or noninfectious uveitis were included. Only one eye per patient was included. |
| Results | Nineteen patients with uveitis underwent cataract surgery during the inclusion period. Median age was 65 years (44 to 83). Nine were women (47.4%). Six patients had a diagnosis of infectious uveitis. Thirteen cases were non-infectious. Ten patients were on systemic treatment for their uveitis before surgery. The eye had been quiescent for at least 3 months in all but one patient. Median best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) changed from 0.4 LogMAR preoperatively (0.15 to 1.8) to 0.1 LogMAR at discharge (0.0 to 0.7; p<0.001). There was 1 case of posterior capsule rupture. BCVA improved after surgery in 17 cases (89.5%), and remained stable in 2 (10.5%). Uveitis recurred in 4 (22.2%). Median time to recurrence was 151 days (41 to 226). |
| Conclusion | Phacoemulsification with primary acrylic intraocular lens implant is a safe procedure, which can improve visual acuity in uveitis patients. Around 1 in 5 patients will experience a flare up, especially in the first 8 months. |
