TitleEndogenous endophthalmitis; a case series
PurposeTo review the clinical features of patients diagnosed as endogenous endophthalmitis (EE).
MethodsThe records of eight patients with a diagnosis of EE who were followed-up for at least three months in between January 2012 and August 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical features of the patients, predisposing factors, treatment modalities and the outcome were evaluated
ResultsTwelve eyes of eight patients were included in the study. The mean age of patients was 56.1±17.0 years (Range:26-76 years) and the mean follow-up time was 5.7±4.3 months (Range:3-15 months). Six patients had diabetes mellitus (DM), one had both DM and was also on an immunsupressive agent. Urinary system procedure, central venous catheter insertion, kidney transplantation, cardiac valve replacement and by-pass surgery, septicemia were among the predisposing factors. The time interval between the diagnosis of EE and the predisposing event was 5.6±4.4 weeks (Range: one-12 weeks). Five eyes underwent vitrectomy surgery in addition to intravitreal antibiotic administration. Best-corrected visual acuity was increased in eight eyes, same in two and worsened in two eyes at the final visit.
ConclusionEndogenous endophthalmitis may end up with a poor visual outcome and it should be remembered that patients with immune depression is prone to develop EE. Early diagnosis is the key for early intervention and thereby a better visual outcome.
