TitleClinical features of unclassified uveitis at the Kyorin Eye Center in Tokyo
PurposeTo investigate clinical features and visual outcomes of unclassified uveitis at the Kyorin Eye Center, Kyorin University Hospital.
MethodsRetrospective review of clinical records of 521 consecutive new patients (188 men, 333 women, 805 eyes) referred between January 2011 and December 2018 with intraocular inflammation that could not be classified as a specific uveitis entity. Data obtained included demographics, laterality, follow-up duration, and anatomic location. Ocular complications, use of local and/or systemic therapies, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were analyzed in 247 patients (403 eyes) followed for at least 1 year.
ResultsMean age at presentation was 53.6 years (range 7–93 years), with a mean follow-up of 18.5 months. By anatomic location, 225 patients (43.1%) had anterior uveitis, 15 (2.9%) had intermediate, 88 (16.9%) had posterior and 193 (37.0%) had panuveitis. The most common ocular complications were cataract (31.0%) and cystoid macular edema (30.8%). 38 patients (15.4%) received systemic therapy consisting of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs and/or biologic agents. The number of eyes with a BCVA > 1.0 at 1 year was 240 (61.5%) in total, and 89 (68.5%), 6 (75.0%), 40 (64.5%), and 105 (55.3 %) for anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis, respectively.
ConclusionIn patients with unclassified uveitis, roughly 80% had anterior or panuveitis. Most eyes had good visual outcomes at 1 year with cataract and cystoid macular edema being the most common ocular complications.
