TitleDetection of Rubella Virus (RV) in Fuchs Uveitis Syndrome (FUS)
PurposeTo report the presence of RV in aqueous humor (AH) in patients (PTs) with FUS
MethodsThe results of consecutive slit lamp performed AH taps obtained between March 2018 - June 2021, in PTs diagnosed of FUS, who presented chronic intermedial uveitis or iridocyclitis, diffuse iris atrophy ± heterochromia, KPs scattered over corneal endothelium, cataract or pseudophakia, absence of posterior synechia and macular edema, were retrospectively recorded. In every eye, AH analysis included: RV Goldmann-Witmer coefficient (GWC), positive (+) if >3, and simultaneously PCR multiplex for: CMV, HSV1-2, VZV, HHV6-7-8 and EVB. In selected cases PCR for RV and GWCs for CMV, HSV1-2, VZV, or Toxoplasma, were also recorded. Except for an in-house RV PCR-real time technic, commercially available kits were used. The number of taps and related complications were recorded
ResultsTwenty eyes of 18 PTs were included, in 15 (83,3%) RV was detected, in 14 (77,7%) by GWC (16 eyes), in 1/14 (7,1%) (15 eyes) by PCR, and in 4/14 (28,5%) by both. CMV was not detected in any eye by PCR or by GWC (13) analysis. PCR detected EBV and HHV6 in 1 eye (+) for RV (PCR / GWC). In 5 PTs/eyes only 1 negative (-) for RV, GWCs were (-) for VZV (1), HSV (3) and Toxoplasma (1). Two of the 3 (-) RV GWC patients had also (-) results for RV PCR and GWCs HSV. After Two taps per eye, hyphema occurred in 7 (35%), one of them required vitrectomy
ConclusionRV is the main etiology of SUF in our PTs, the detection of viral antibodies in AH is more accurate
