TitleAn overview of the management of punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) at University Hospital Southampton
PurposeTo investigate the management and long-term outcome of patients diagnosed with PIC
MethodsWe searched for the number of patients who were treated for punctate inner choroidopathy over a 5-year period. We then analysed the patient demographics, visual outcomes and treatment options of these patients.
ResultsA total of 17 patients were included in this study. The average age was 45.8 years. There were 15 females and 2 males. The majority had both eyes involved and 4 patients had 1 eye involved. 13 eyes of 21 patients developed secondary CNV, 12 of which received anti-VEGF treatment. Of those who received anti-VEGF injection, 3 had oral Prednisolone initiated on the day when active CNV is seen. Overall, 8 of 21 patients were started on immunosuppressive treatment (IMT), 6 of which also received intravitreal anti-VEGF for secondary CNV. The average number of injections received in patients treated for secondary CNV with anti-VEGF alone (n=5) was 7, anti-VEGF + Prednisolone (n=3) was 9 and anti-VEGF + IMT (n = 8) was 4. Bevacizumab was the most common choice of anti-VEGF. There was no significant difference of the mean visual acuity at presentation (Logmar 0.3, n = 34 eyes) when compared to at last follow-up visit (Logmar 0.4, p = 0.46).
ConclusionPatients with PIC and secondary CNV who received anti-VEGF followed by IMT required less number of injections when compared to those treated with anti-VEGF injection alone. Combined treatment of long-term IMT with intravitreal injection could be useful in the management of PIC with secondary CNV to reduce the risk of CNV recurrence.
